Gay bathroom art for the room built around a body. Water runs, the mirror fogs, and the tiles finally get something worth looking at. Painters worked this out long before the plumbing did. Men who loved men painted bathers, and the Royal Academy hung Henry Scott Tuke’s Falmouth swimmers year after year, barely dressed and entirely at ease. So hang a nude bather where you shave and guests wash up. Is that too much? No. But is it enough? Never... these gay bath prints love company.

About this collection
Every shower is a small bathhouse with the lights left on. Bathhouse art is older than the towel rail. Charles Demuth kept his steam-room watercolors out of polite company, homoerotic and gloriously unrepentant, and each Turkish bath painting reads like a diary entry he forgot to burn. Marsden Hartley gave a Finnish-Yankee Sauna the heat of a confession. Thomas Eakins painted himself into his own Swimming Hole. Eugène Jansson made the Naval Bath House in Stockholm look like Olympus with a cold-water tap.
The male bathers painting habit never went out of fashion. It moved indoors. Nude swimmers, wet shoulders, a towel slung low, a nape catching light through frosted glass, and my own pieces leaning against the old masters on the tiles. Call it queer bathroom art or gay bathroom decor. Guests will tell you it's the reason they took forty minutes to wash their hands. It hangs above a clawfoot tub as easily as in a pokey ensuite, and it makes the usual men’s bathroom wall art look like a sad sticker on the cistern. Lock the door. The mirror’s already fogging, and somebody in the next room is pretending not to wonder.
