Standing Male Nude with Crossed Arms - Egon Schiele Art Print / Canvas
Vienna, 1912, a young male nude stands alone on bare paper with arms crossed. Forearms raised like a barricade the artist built against his own exposure. Egon Schiele painted this self portrait the same year Neulengbach jailed him on charges tied to indecency, and the watercolor still carries that rebellious heat under its skin.
Pencil contour runs loose from the ochre wash beneath it, ribs drawn one direction, flesh painted another, so the figure seems to split from its own outline. Cheeks flush with red-ochre patches above a mouth left open mid-word. Cobalt-blue dashes freckle the sternum and hip like bruises caught by watercolor rather than fists. One leg disappears into an indigo-black stocking, planted and solid. The other stays bare, thin, unfinished.
This is Austrian Expressionism at its rawest hour, years before Klimt's gilded ornament could soften a single line of it. Genitals sit exposed and unshaded, refusing the modesty a Secession-era Vienna audience still expected. Nothing here asks forgiveness. The paper simply watches him confess.
