About this Artwork
Louis Anquetin's Dancing Nude of 1897 arrests the body mid-revolution, a male figure unspooling through space with the taut conviction of Cloisonnist line now channeled into a single sepia register. One knee cresting upward; the torso pivots. Swirling drapery arcs above like a spent wave or a cloud torn loose, framing the figure in a near-circular sweep that recalls Rubensian composition studies.
A cross-hatched spray of thistle foliage anchoring the lower right, grounding this airborne moment in something rooted. The burnt umber depth of shadow tracing latissimus and gluteal plane, each stroke a calibrated pressure.
Anquetin's Post-Impressionist training at Cormon's atelier folds back here toward Baroque academicism. This is the fin-de-siècle figure study stripped of cabaret polish — raw anatomical observation pressed into a drawn surface that still holds every line.
