About this Artwork
Georg Pauli's Badande Män (Bathing Men) opens onto a rocky shoreline, where one nude man holds the foreground and a companion's legs edge in from the right. The Swedish oil painting shows a scene of open-air bathing, a summer custom dear to Nordic life and to the breakaway artists who prized fresh country air.
A pale granite cliff rises at the left, closing the small cove. Loose blue-and-white strokes sweep across the upper corner, half sky and half water, brushed wet and fast.
Pauli spent formative seasons at Grez-sur-Loing, the riverside village where Scandinavian painters gathered to work outdoors, and the bathing motif followed him home to Sweden's own summer coasts.
This bather is an athlete first, a study of muscle held still. Pauli kept a long love of the classical body, the old ideal of a sound mind housed in a sound frame. And he came back to bathers and athletes across his career.
