Olive drab swallows his shoulders. His puttees and scuffed russet boots stretch toward a second pair of legs already asleep in the teal-green grass. A rifle lies flat beside him. Falls cut this 1917 lithograph down to a few flat inks and let the hand-lettered placard do the recruiting. Moss-green letters on an ivory card. Plain as a mess hall notice, pitched to a boy with three idle hours before taps.
