What Penfield understood — and College Crews from circa 1908 proves it — is that the male athletic body, stripped to white singlet and posed with an oar, is already a poster. Each of the ten rowers stands against a stone-gray ground with the formal stillness of a type specimen, their ochre-gold shafts crossing and fanning like structural ribs.

The flat-color graphic illustration method, drawn from Penfield's years as Harper's Monthly art director, leaves musculature as suggestion — peach-rose thighs, contour ink line at the knee, no tenebrism, no academic shadow. Instead, scarlet letter panels and collegiate pennant blades do the work of individuation: deep cobalt-blue bearing a gold fleur-de-lis for one school, burnt amber-orange for another, crimson-maroon and navy-indigo claiming the upper tier.

The Art Nouveau-adjacent flatness lifts this into something beyond sports record — it is a chromatic census of early American varsity rowing culture, each blade a color-coded allegiance from the Intercollegiate Rowing Association era when crew was the sport of statesmen in training. One figure alone wears charcoal-gray, standing apart with his oar-shaft crossing the others, a minor chord against ten measures of white.
