Queer-coded means the subtext is there for a reader to find — through possessiveness, secrecy, or forbidden intimacy — without the text ever stating it outright, which is how Dracula and Carmilla work. Explicitly queer vampire media states it directly: AMC's Interview with the Vampire series, for instance, makes Louis explicitly gay and renders the Lestat–Louis romance explicit, where the 1994 film only implied it.

Yes — academic work tracks a real shift. A chapter in The Palgrave Handbook of the Vampire is devoted specifically to how the vampire moved from being portrayed as bloodthirsty and cruel to sympathetic starting in the 1970s–80s, while a companion chapter in the same volume examines gay vampires as metaphor and as a lens on homophobia in film and television — tracking how attitudes embedded in the genre shifted alongside real-world ones.

Beyond Dracula and Carmilla as literary origins, screen touchstones include The Hunger (1983), The Lost Boys (1987) — directed by openly gay filmmaker Joel Schumacher — and Interview with the Vampire in both its 1994 film and 2022 series forms, which moved the genre from subtext toward direct representation.
