About the Artwork

Ludovico Carracci painted this press of shoulders onto wet lime in Bologna between 1589 and 1592, one bay of the Palazzo Magnani frieze retelling Rome’s founding. We stand behind the escort. Nobody turns to greet us. Mustard-gold backs catch the plaster light, yellow ocher sunk so deep into buon fresco that muscle reads as beaten brass. Steel helmets crowd the upper register like a rising tide. Spear shafts cut the scene into vertical bars, a cage built out of obedience.

Plutarch supplies the line painted beneath: from success comes pride. Romulus walks ahead in purple, out of frame, screened by Celeres who ran fast and Lictores who carried the rods. Their legs survive the crop, sage-green tunic skirts swinging over olive-tan ground. Bare feet grip the floor. A leather scabbard knocking at one hip.

The Carracci academy taught Bologna to look at working bodies this closely. An art print carries that scrutiny into a hallway. A crimson cloak slips past the right edge, and the escort keeps walking out of the picture.

Origin Story

Ludovico Carracci (1555–1619) is the Bolognese painter, draughtsman, and etcher who stood at the hinge between late Mannerism and the early Italian Baroque. Trained under Prospero Fontana, he studied in Florence, Parma, Mantua, and Venice before returning to Bologna, where he and his cousins Annibale and Agostino frescoed Palazzo Fava and Palazzo Magnani.

Together they founded the Accademia degli Incamminati, where drawing from life replaced Mannerist artifice and shaped the Bolognese School. Ludovico kept it alive after his cousins left for Rome, teaching a generation while painting altarpieces of flickering light, monumental figures, and raw devotional feeling. His Portrait of the Tacconi Family reveals a sharp psychological eye. After a brief visit to Rome in 1602, he worked in Piacenza, then returned home, where his late, mystical style grew darker, theatrical, and strange.
