About this Artwork
Charles Demuth's Two Sailors stages its pair of U.S. Navy dress-blue figures close on the paper, ochre ground glowing beneath layered indigo wash of watercolor and graphite. One sailor turns his head toward the other, chin dropped, and the look that passes between them is unmistakably charged, hunger dressed up as camaraderie. Flat caps tilt at matching angles, black neckerchiefs knot the same silhouette twice, cheeks flushed rust-pink with a heat that has nothing to do with weather.
Painted around 1930 during Demuth's private Provincetown years, the sheet belongs to a cache of homoerotic watercolors he kept from public exhibition, circulated instead among friends inside the Stieglitz circle who read the desire in it plainly. This was cruising rendered in pigment, two uniformed men sizing each other up in a doorway. Their visible want erect and undeniable. Drawn into a scene that Demuth allowed only his closest circle to see fully finished in paint.
