Charles Demuth sets On "That" Street inside a corridor of doorways, three men gathered where a rust-brown wall carries faint gold lettering, fragments of old signage worn thin by weather and years. This was Sands Street, the strip running along the Brooklyn Navy Yard where sailors on liberty and local men found a rare stretch of city willing to look the other way.

The man in a belted brown coat stands with his back to the street, hands clasped around a pair of gloves he hasn't put on, while two Navy dress-blue sailors close around him from either side. One holds a steady gaze under a tilted flat cap, the other watches with an open collar and a harder set to his jaw.

Demuth rendered the scene in watercolor and graphite, hatch-marked sidewalk giving way to a doorway gone black with shadow at the composition's edge. That threshold, half street and half sanctioned hiding place, is where three uniformed and ununiformed men chose to stand close enough to be misread as nothing at all.
