About this collection
Napoleon Sarony photographed Oscar Wilde in New York in 1882 and sold the result as a collectible card. Eugen Sandow flexed for the same studio and the fan mail never let up. Charles Eisenmann’s tattooed men travelled on cabinet cards, and Wilhelm von Gloeden’s Sicilian youths went out as postcards, which is about as public as a nude can get. Antique gay photos like these anchor the shelf, surrounded by antique gay art made to be copied.
Then the printing press caught up. Edward Penfield drew posters for Harper’s. J.C. Leyendecker painted rowers, footballers and sailors for Kuppenheimer ads and Collier’s covers. Wartime poster artists sent young men off in crisp uniforms, and Egon Schiele and F.C.B. Cadell filled sketchbooks with vintage gay drawings that still feel wet. Posters, modernist canvases from Marsden Hartley and Charles Demuth, old art made to be pinned up and passed hand to hand. Some of it is frank vintage erotic art, the kind collectors once filed under vintage male erotica. Most of it just stares back, pleased with itself.
