About this Artwork

The swimmer enters La Farge's picture plane diagonally as a flesh-toned form cutting the viridian deep — arms outreached, legs fading into teal wash as if the sea is slowly completing the sentence he began.

Painted with the oil-layered translucency La Farge mastered across decades of American Aesthetic Movement practice, the work refuses drama: a slate-gray sky with lavender cloud-pull, a foam-break crest, a nude figure in flesh tones of rose and ochre-khaki. His head is turned down — no gaze outward, no appeal to shore.

This is self-contained motion, intimate with open water in a way that connects to La Farge's Pacific journeys and his long dialogue with Japanese art's comfort with dissolution. The figure's body carries warmth against cold depth, and the broken pigment at the water's surface makes the sea feel not like a setting but like a collaborator pulling him forward.

Artist Biography

John La Farge (1835–1910) was the New York polymath who reinvented American sacred space one pane at a time. Trained in Paris under Thomas Couture and sharpened in Newport alongside William Morris Hunt, he fused Japonisme, Byzantine richness, and Aesthetic Movement color into murals and opalescent stained glass of startling originality. His interior for H. H. Richardson's Trinity Church, Boston — executed with Augustus Saint-Gaudens — ignited the American Renaissance in decoration.

Pioneering the layered superimposition of glass that put him in bitter patent rivalry with Louis Comfort Tiffany, La Farge produced some 400 luminous windows still glowing across New England. Travels to Japan, Samoa, and Tahiti with Henry Adams deepened his palette with Pacific light. Decorated by France with the Legion of Honor, he remains the Gilded Age's most quietly essential visionary.
