Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840–1902) was a German-Austrian psychiatrist and forensic neurologist whose rigorous empiricism reshaped the boundaries of medicine and human self-understanding. Born in Mannheim and educated at Heidelberg, he held chairs at Strasbourg, Graz, and finally the University of Vienna, where his clinical and courtroom expertise made him the most authoritative psychiatrist in the German-speaking world. His three-volume Textbook of Psychiatry and Textbook of Forensic Psychopathology established the institutional frameworks of his field.

His landmark Psychopathia Sexualis (1886) — forensic in intent, revolutionary in reach — coined the clinical vocabulary of sadism, masochism, and fetishism, and gave sexology its first systematic taxonomy. Influencing Freud, Klimt, Schiele, and Proust, Krafft-Ebing argued for decriminalization of homosexuality decades before it would be achieved, insisting that moral judgement had no place where pathology began. His shadow still falls across psychiatry, forensic medicine, and the long history of how human desire has been named.
