About this Artwork
In Athletes Dressing, John Copley strips the interwar British sporting scene down to muscle, motion, and the intimate candour of men caught mid-transformation. One figure wrenches a chartreuse yellow jersey over his bowed skull, arms tangled in the pull of cloth, the act rendered as pure physical fact in Copley's flat crayon-grain lithography. His companions stand half-turned in rose-pink flesh tones and slate-gray shadow, each body incomplete, paused at the threshold between crowd and pitch.
Copley studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks, and that anatomical rigour ghosts every loosely pulled contour here. The amber-orange atmospheric wash behind the figures bleeds toward a white stadium arc, placing male camaraderie inside the new mass spectacle of 1930s sport. The acid yellow-green ground pulses up between boots and shadow, raw as fresh turf.
