Gay Greek art began in the gymnasium, where athletes trained oiled and naked and poets took notes, and it carried on at the symposium, where the wine was watered and the talk was not. Gay Roman art inherited the habit and added gold leaf. None of these are ancient gay paintings lifted from a villa wall. They’re that old world as later artists dreamed it back: a wine god with grapes in his hair, Narcissus bending towards his own face, Patroclus stretched out in the half-dark. Gay ancient art, told by every century that wanted the story. Homoerotic Greek art never went out of style. It just kept changing hands.

About this collection
Barely an ancient gay painting survives, since time has been rough on painted walls and panels. So later artists did the remembering. Michelangelo packed his ceiling with athletic nudes, William Etty gave Rome’s heroes a studio glow, and Magnus Enckell turned fauns and bacchants pale and dreamy. Ancient homosexual art is the textbook phrase. These gay Greek paintings would rather flirt than lecture.
Around 1900 the camera joined in. Wilhelm von Gloeden photographed local men on Sicilian hillsides in laurel and little else, and Napoleon Sarony photographed the strongman Eugen Sandow as a living statue. Here gay ancient Greek art meets the darkroom.
Then comes my own work, new pieces made with one eye on antiquity: gods at a bacchanal that never heard last drinks called, myth with a queer wink. Roman homosexual art had Hadrian and Antinous for its great love story, and Roman homoerotic art had the baths. Both turn up here, reimagined.

I love this case! It’s beautiful! I’ve had it for about a month so far and have dropped my phone several times - my phone stayed in and the case is holding up well. The quality of the image isn’t grainy - you can see all the little details :)
Fabulous, Kellie! So pleased to hear your new treasure's guarding your phone in style. I love how fine the printing detail is, too — makes all the difference. Thanks a bunch for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy!

The artist captured the spirit of revelry and wild dance. A dancer, say, in the entourage of Dionysus. Sepia—old, say Renaissance (haven’t looked up the artist. The seller was knowledgeable, friendly, and the packaging was secure.
Huzzah! Thanks, James! Delighted you’re delighted and enjoyed our chats about art, design and Renaissance fairs. Look forward to helping you find more members of your retinue in the future.
