Artwork Description
Walter Crane understood Pegasus as cosmological argument: here, the creature's umber-and-sienna barrel surges left while amber-ivory primary feathers rake the sky, each quill laid in flat declarative strokes that betray the book illustrator turned mythmaker.
The youth's white drapery streams behind him like torn cloud. His tawny, muscle-corded arm reaches for a gold-fringed bridle — the only jeweled object in a composition otherwise built from slate blue, teal marsh, and the dark olive canopy above. Below, scarlet marsh-flowers mark earth's claim on what is trying to leave it. The amber cartouche at the corner seals the image like a colophon on a folio page.
Where Crane's Arts and Crafts contemporaries wove patterns into walls and textiles, he wove them into sky and sinew, turning the legend of Pegasus into a decorative field charged with Victorian classicism, recalling the illuminated manuscripts and decorative friezes that shaped his practice across five decades of British illustration.
