Artwork Description
Caravaggio's Narcissus, painted around 1600, curves the boy's body into a closed loop above a pool as black as Roman pitch. Ivory-cream fabric catches the sole light source, its lead-white creases mapping every breath of longing the youth cannot name. The alla prima urgency of the brushwork — skin fused from rose-beige underlayer to glazed surface in a single pass — makes the boy tactile, mortal, precarious.
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio took Ovid's Metamorphoses and stripped it of mythology's grandeur. What remains is closer to a Roman street kid at a trough: earthy, mortal, doomed. The teal-green cap at his knee anchors the only cool note in a composition of suffocating warm shadow.
Below the waterline his reflection darkens, dissolves — not a twin but an erasure, pulled toward the pitch-black ground where self-love finally drowns. The Baroque master's tenebrism cuts the figure from all context — no shore, no sky, no world beyond this one act of looking.
