About this Artwork
Ludwig Hohlwein's Night of the Amazons — the Munich Englischer Garten pageant of 1936, rendered in his signature gouache flat-color blocking — locks a jade-green rearing horse against a jet-black sky. The Amazon leans back with a golden lance trailing behind, a chalk-white tunic gathered at the thigh, flesh-toned arm muscles catching the only warmth the night allows. This is German Art Deco poster design at its most operatic: color as command, not description.
The horse's neck carries rose garland decoration, deep rose-pink blooms looped across illuminated jade, the whole animal elevated like a civic monument thrust living into the dark. Hohlwein's Sachplakat lineage runs through every flat silhouette edge — no gradients, no atmosphere, just pigment pressed into authority.
Below, a powdered-wig masquerade crowd collapses into lilac-mauve shadow, lantern amber glowing between costumed heads. Four-pointed emerald stars punctuate the black field, cold and still, while the pageant procession churns beneath them.
