Description

The taut figure emerges from a graphite ether, skin unspooled in spectral strata. Restout’s faun, a mythic brute of Arcadian sensuality, leans against an invisible altar of longing, his musculature a silent psalm to ancient desire. Coarse hair bristles like a votive crown, while the slope of his back arcs toward forgotten Dionysian rites.

His visage—twisted, unrepentant—peers to the left, a fleeting specter of longing in pastoral wastelands. Craggy hills echo his sinewy repose, charting the topography of the soul’s secret landscapes. His fingers claw at earth's brittle skin, entangling flesh and dream.

Restout’s charcoal invocation, mythic and immediate, a portal to an orgiastic memory that never was. Etching the divine’s hungering shape into the plane of the mortal.

About the Artist

Jean Restout II (1692–1768), painter of the French Baroque, twisted brush into a fervent hymn to mythic gesture and mortal ache. Son of an artistic dynasty, Restout moved beyond the polite lyricism of courtly France, tearing into canvas and charcoal with Dionysian hunger.

His figures—muscles coiled in perpetual climax—loomed large, lit by the cold sun of classical form and the sweaty theatre of human myth. Shadows etched in Parisian salons, Restout’s nudes twisted and rose like wine-dark prayers to antiquity, swirling in chiaroscuro fevers.

In his hands, history became a lithe satyr, both devotional and debauched, sanctified and profane.
