Description

You'll find yourself captivated by the enigmatic allure of Chase's "Study of Flesh Color and Gold". This 1880s pastel gem showcases a model's bare back, her flesh tones exquisitely rendered against a backdrop of shimmering gold. Chase's vigorous pastel strokes rival oil paint in their richness, creating a velvety texture that seems to glow from within.

The composition, influenced by Japanese prints, tilts and crops daringly — placing you intimately close to the subject. Vibrant splashes of teal and coral dance across the golden background, while a lush green kimono drapes sensually around the figure.

This avant-garde piece merges Western and Eastern aesthetics, demonstrating Chase's mastery of pastel and his role in elevating the medium. As you gaze upon this provocative study of light, color, and form, you'll feel transported to a world where flesh and gold intertwine in sublime harmony.

About the Artist

William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) was an American painter renowned for his portraiture, landscapes, and role in American Impressionism. Born in Indiana, Chase studied art in New York and Europe, adopting a loose, brushy style influenced by Munich’s Academy of Fine Arts. In New York, he set up a lavish studio and became a focal point of the city’s art scene. Chase was also a dedicated teacher, founding the Chase School, later Parsons School of Design, and teaching at major institutions, including the Art Students League. Chase was a prolific portraitist, too—capturing notable figures of his time, while also creating evocative landscapes and still lifes. His style ranged from detailed realism to loose Impressionism, featuring vivid outdoor scenes and domestic tranquility. Chase’s influence extended through his students, including Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper. He died in 1916, leaving a legacy celebrated in major American art collections.
