Chuzenji Temple, Utagahama - Kawase Hasui Art Print

Ink meets paper in a whisper of pine and water. Kawase Hasui’s 1931 woodblock print fixes the Chuzenji Temple approach at Utagahama in permanent amber, the vermilion torii gate burning against viridian shadows. Carved key-block lines trace the stone embankment’s rough texture as bokashi washes bleed indigo across Lake Chuzenji’s surface.
Two boatmen navigate the azure expanse, their vessels leaving faint impressions in the pigment. Above, pine branches filter the light, casting umber shadows across the travelers below. The Nikko region unfolds in layers of atmospheric perspective, distant mountains dissolving into pale mist.
This shin-hanga revival captures the Showa period’s fascination with traditional ukiyo-e techniques applied to modern sensibilities. The print’s surface holds the ghost of the carver’s knife, each impression marking time as the vermilion gateway stands open, inviting passage into the immutable now.
Hasui’s precise registration captures the specific gravity of the scene, the stone lantern’s weight anchoring the composition as clouds drift overhead. The 1931 impression preserves a moment of stillness at Utagahama, where travelers pause before the sacred threshold.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical
Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal
Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)
Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws
Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
