Starlit Night at Miyajima - Kawase Hasui Art Print / Canvas

Kawase Hasui pins Miyajima's great torii to a sheet of indigo glass, the gate's vermillion frame gone plum under starlight where the Seto Inland Sea holds its reflection without a ripple. This 1928 shin-hanga print catches Itsukushima Shrine's floating gate at the hour tourists rarely see: pine boughs from the shoreline canopy curve into the upper frame like brushed ink, screening a sky pricked with three faint stars.

Bokashi gradation carries the water from teal shallows into a black-blue deep, so the torii's twin pillars seem to grow roots downward as much as up. A stone ishidoro lantern, carved in the old Itsukushima style, holds two windows of candlelight that Hasui rendered in a single warm ochre stroke, the only heat in a print built entirely from cold pigment.

Night falls, and the shrine keeps watching itself in the tide. Watanabe Shozaburo's studio published this Taisho-to-Showa transitional work when Japanese woodblock printmaking was reinventing itself for Western collectors, trading ukiyo-e's flat theater for Hasui's atmospheric, almost photographic dusk.
