Snow accumulates upon the pine boughs with deliberate gravity, each needle bent beneath the hush of winter's accumulation. Kawase Hasui's Shiba Zojoji captures the Zojoji Temple complex in 1925, where vermilion lacquer walls pierce the monochrome drift, a defiant architecture of crimson against the umber-grey sky. The shin-hanga master employs bokashi gradients to render falling flakes that dissolve into mist, creating an atmospheric depth that pulls the viewer through the frame.

A solitary figure advances beneath a bamboo wagasa, the traditional umbrella tilting against the wind, purple robes trailing in the snow. This pedestrian anchors the composition, human scale measured against the tiered temple roofs and the massive pine trunk that bisects the foreground. The Taisho era printmaking technique—modern ukiyo-e revived through nishiki-e color blocks—preserves the tactile weight of snow on branches, each white crest a sculptural presence.

Hasui's winter view offers no escape from the cold, only a meditation on endurance. The red gates stand immutable while snow continues its silent accumulation, a moment of Tokyo history suspended in ink and pigment.

Origin Story

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was Japan’s great poet of place, etching twilight rivers, temple courtyards, and snow-laden lanes into the soul of modern printmaking. A master of the shin-hanga movement, he fused ukiyo-e tradition with Western naturalism, creating nearly 1,000 woodblock prints shimmering with atmosphere, moonlight, and rain. Born in Tokyo, Hasui abandoned his family’s trade after its collapse to study art under Kiyokata Kaburagi, who gave him the name “Hasui”—“water gushing from a spring.” Collaborating with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, Hasui redefined landscape art for Japan’s new century. Revered abroad, crowned a Living National Treasure in 1956, his prints endure as lyrical windows into a vanishing Japan.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
