Clear Weather After Snow at Asakusa Kannon Temple - Kawase Hasui Art Print / Canvas

Kawase Hasui's 1926 print of Asakusa Kannon Temple opens beneath a roofline weighted with fresh snow, its black tile edges rimmed in vermillion lacquer against a sky sliding from cobalt to pale rose near the horizon.

This shin-hanga print, produced under Watanabe Shozaburo's Taisho-era publishing house, renders Sensoji's storied silhouette through bokashi gradation, that hand-brushed color bleed distinguishing Japanese woodblock printing from flat commercial imitation. 

Snow clings to bare branches at the temple's edge, each twig rendered with a printmaker's patience for winter's slow arithmetic. Below, a stone lantern and iron-latticed screens anchor the composition's lower register, their measured pattern broken only by the red gallery railing running above.

Hasui traveled Japan cataloguing temples, shrines, and coastal towns changing under early twentieth-century modernization, and this Asakusa view preserves Tokyo's Edo-period devotional architecture at a threshold moment between empires.
