Spring in Arashiyama glows through nine slender red pine trunks, each column of bark cut deep by Kawase Hasui's chisel in 1934, the year shin-hanga printmaking reached its clearest maturity under Watanabe Shōzaburō's studio. Beyond the trunks, the Katsura River widens into a pale jade sheet, its current rendered in the fine bokashi gradation that made Hasui's Kyoto river scenes famous among Taishō-era print collectors.

A covered pleasure boat drifts near the far bank, a lone boatman poling passengers beneath its low thatched roof, a quiet echo of Arashiyama's old ferry trade along the Sagano hills. Cherry blossoms crowd the lower foreground in dense white clusters, sakura petals catching gold light against ochre-washed sky that Hasui layered by hand on mulberry paper. And pine needles hang in green tufts overhead, framing the water like a woodblock lattice.

This is spring caught between bark and blossom, a Kyoto riverbank pressed into ukiyo-e's twentieth-century inheritance, where nature printmaking and quiet human labor share one unhurried frame.

Origin Story

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was Japan’s great poet of place, etching twilight rivers, temple courtyards, and snow-laden lanes into the soul of modern printmaking. A master of the shin-hanga movement, he fused ukiyo-e tradition with Western naturalism, creating nearly 1,000 woodblock prints shimmering with atmosphere, moonlight, and rain. Born in Tokyo, Hasui abandoned his family’s trade after its collapse to study art under Kiyokata Kaburagi, who gave him the name “Hasui”—“water gushing from a spring.” Collaborating with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, Hasui redefined landscape art for Japan’s new century. Revered abroad, crowned a Living National Treasure in 1956, his prints endure as lyrical windows into a vanishing Japan.
