A dirt trail cuts the hillside on a diagonal in this 1953 Kawase Hasui print, splitting solid conifer growth above a sleepy Izu farming hamlet called Nishibira.
Thatch roofs, gabled and heavy, sit low against tilled fields banked in muted jade and slate gray. Two bundled haystacks lean by the barn wall, wrapped straw catching pale gold where morning sun first touches the valley. A cherry tree opens its petals in soft rose bloom, a single bright note against acres of pine needle green stitched in vertical woodblock strokes.
Hasui, working within the shin-hanga movement that revived traditional ukiyo-e craft for a modern century, chose this corner of Shizuoka prefecture over famous temple views, favoring instead the daily choreography of planting season. Below the house, paddy water reflects a sky brushed in pale cerulean and oyster white, cloud bands drifting east.
Nothing in the scene hurries. The print holds a farming village at rest, caught between winter's last chill and the green rush of a Japanese spring settling into the Izu hills.
