About the Artwork

Somebody has set the hill of Tangier like a theatrical production. David Roberts began as a scene painter at Drury Lane, and he stacks the view in layers: a terrace where a woman in rose and blue rests with a child, flat roofs stepping upward, a tiled minaret dead center and a citadel dissolving into bare paper at the crest.

A man in a striped vest and white trousers carries a bundle past the pair. Two figures talk at the left, and a cat plays with a ball of yarn at the lower edge. Bands of patterned tile climb the minaret, and a pennant tops its small lantern beside a domed building. Sepia and cream washes shape the slope, and haze thickens toward the crest until the ramparts read as the backdrop of a stage. A bay of watery blue opens on the far side with a ship riding in it.

Roberts crossed from Gibraltar to Tangier on his tour of Spain and Morocco in the early 1830s, and his sketches of the trip later fed lithographs in a book published in 1837. A traveler's drawing like this one keeps its color for the people and leaves the architecture to wash.

The Citadel of Tangier, Morocco awaits your study or hallway as an antique sepia watercolor, where a haze of old rooftops gives a bare wall a long view.

Origin Story

David Roberts (1796–1864) was a Scottish painter who began as a house painter’s apprentice in Edinburgh and learned vast space on the stage, designing scenery for circuses and theatres in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. Having sketched Normandy in 1824, he was a full-time fine artist by 1829 and travelled through Spain and Tangiers in the early 1830s.

Persuaded by J. M. W. Turner to commit to painting, he sailed for Egypt in 1838 and toured Nubia, Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon. With lithographer Louis Haghe he turned his sketches into The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia (1842–1849), funded by subscribers headed by Queen Victoria. Seen through a British traveller’s eye, these Orientalist views of temples, deserts and towns reached a Victorian public. Elected Royal Academician in 1841, he died suddenly in London.
