About the Artwork

A column of men walks the ridge and the cloud leans down to meet it. Arnold Genthe sets the camera low, so the procession cuts across the horizon with long shafts rising above the heads and a small flag lifting near the center. Their poles tilt in one direction, shafts rising above their heads and a banner lifted near the center.

Two thirds of the frame belong to the sky. The sun has gone behind the cloud, so nobody casts a shadow and each figure reads as a silhouette drawn in ink. Below them the ground is bare gravel with one patch of lighter earth where the hill has worn thin.

Across Morocco, annual festivals called moussems gather around the tombs of saints, and the roads fill with walkers, horsemen and flags converging on one shrine. Whether this line marks one of them or some other errand, it moves the way such festivals do, with the mounted man at the edge and the crowd flowing on foot.

Genthe works in a narrow range of tones: charcoal figures, a sky of pewter and a slope worn down to gravel and pale scrub. The marchers compress into one dark band and small patches of paler earth break the ground under their feet. Clouds hang so low that the whole column seems to walk beneath a lid. Genthe, who would later try autochrome color plates, keeps only gray here: a weight of cloud, a file of dark figures and one white horse holding the far right of the ridge.

Procession, Morocco awaits your hallway or living room as a vintage documentary photograph, where a long line of walkers gives your wall a horizon to follow.

Origin Story

Arnold Genthe (1869–1942) was a German-American photographer who transformed the lens into an instrument of beauty and witness. Born in Berlin and trained as a classical scholar at the University of Jena, he immigrated to San Francisco in 1895, teaching himself photography through the streets of Chinatown — producing the only known images of that neighborhood before the 1906 earthquake. Working in the soft-focus Pictorialist style, he pursued what he called the "gospel of beauty," capturing soul over surface.

From California to New York, his portrait subjects ranged from Greta Garbo and Sarah Bernhardt to Theodore Roosevelt and Isadora Duncan. A pioneer of autochrome color photography, his archive — nearly 20,000 items now held by the Library of Congress — remains an irreplaceable record of early twentieth-century American life, culture, and celebrity.
