About the Artwork

A woman in a crimson shawl sits on the parapet with a stringed instrument on her knee, and the whitewashed town runs down to the sea below her. Rudolf Ernst places a second figure on the carpet beneath her in garnet and cream, her head resting on one hand beside a hookah whose long hose coils across the rug. Pillows in red and ochre prop her shoulders. A tray of brass cups, a jug and a tambourine wait at the front.

Houses climb a hill at the right to a single brown minaret. At the left corner of the parapet a panel of carved plaster glows sand-gold. Moroccan plasterers carve such panels, called gebs, with sharp steel tools while the plaster is still damp, so each pattern has to be cut in a single sitting. And beyond the wall a gray-blue ridge marks a far shore.

Ernst, who settled in Paris in 1876 and collected Islamic tiles, paints every glazed square the way a collector looks at one. A pale lemon sky holds one band of blue-gray cloud, and the sea lies flat below the mountains. The musician plays to the evening and the woman on the rug listens with her head on her hand.

On the Terrace, Tangier awaits your living room or bedroom as a rooftop musicale, where an instrument rests between songs above a white hillside town.

Origin Story

Rudolf Ernst (1854-1932) was an Austro-French Orientalist painter, printmaker and ceramics painter, born in Vienna to the architect Leopold Ernst. He entered the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna at fifteen, studying under August Eisenmenger and Anselm Feuerbach, and copying old masters in Rome, before settling in Paris in 1876. There he exhibited at the Paris Salon as Rodolphe Ernst, debuting in 1877.

From 1885 he turned to Orientalist subjects, painting oil-on-panel mosque interiors, harem guards and merchants drawn from travels in Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Istanbul, and from photographs, prints and souvenirs. Warm, vivid and minutely detailed, these scenes offer a Western imagining of daily life, shaped by Jean-Léon Gérôme and his friend Ludwig Deutsch. In 1905 he withdrew to Fontenay-aux-Roses, decorating his home in Ottoman style and producing faience tiles with Orientalist themes.
