Giclée Printing

A fortress built to watch the sea now watches two walkers on sand. Hercules Brabazon Brabazon leaves the ramparts nearly bare paper under thin washes of rose and peach, so tower and wall read as one mass of afternoon heat under a cobalt sky so deep the sheet seems to hum. A horseshoe gate with a studded arch breaks the base of the wall in a dark curve.

Moroccan builders cap ramparts, and even mosques, with stepped crenellations called shorfat, which serve both as parapet and as decoration. Behind the gate a square tower rises in pale yellow, and a massive block of wall billows out in peach on the right. A scalloped arch with dotted studs opens in the shade.

The two walkers wear long robes and cross the pale sand with violet shadows trailing behind them in thin lines. A knot of tiny figures gathers far off at the right in flecks of red and blue. Portugal took Tangier in 1471, and the notched battlements still read as a garrison's skyline above the strait where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.

The washes run wet into wet in the sky and bleed into darker clouds of blue, while pencil lines of the tower still show through the pink. Brabazon painted for his own pleasure, and a sheet this quick trusts bare paper to be sand. Nothing is outlined twice.
