Kawase Hasui set Ueno Park at dusk, and the pagoda of Toshogu Shrine climbed into a cobalt sky that thinned toward seafoam near the horizon, the bokashi gradient printing his shin-hanga studio was known for. Cherry blossom crowds the base in blossom-pink drifts against that same charcoal shadow, each petal cut with the block precision that carried Hasui's woodblock prints from Watanabe's Tokyo studio to collectors overseas.

Toshogu's roofline stacks upward, patient and exact, lit from within by color no photograph could hold steady, cherry blossom framing an old shrine tower against a sky still losing its light. A crescent moon, cream and thin as a paring knife, hangs left of the spire above vermilion-lacquered beams glowing beneath charcoal-tiled roofs stacked in Edo-period proportion.

This 1948 print catches spring evening at its most fragile hour, sakura heavy on the branch, temple bells quiet at the eaves, moonrise arriving before the last cobalt has drained from the sky. Few Japanese printmaking scenes balance architecture and bloom so evenly.

Origin Story

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was Japan’s great poet of place, etching twilight rivers, temple courtyards, and snow-laden lanes into the soul of modern printmaking. A master of the shin-hanga movement, he fused ukiyo-e tradition with Western naturalism, creating nearly 1,000 woodblock prints shimmering with atmosphere, moonlight, and rain. Born in Tokyo, Hasui abandoned his family’s trade after its collapse to study art under Kiyokata Kaburagi, who gave him the name “Hasui”—“water gushing from a spring.” Collaborating with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, Hasui redefined landscape art for Japan’s new century. Revered abroad, crowned a Living National Treasure in 1956, his prints endure as lyrical windows into a vanishing Japan.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
