Standing Man (1913) - Egon Schiele Art Print / Canvas
Egon Schiele turns this standing man fully away from the viewer and drapes a single block of maroon across his shoulders, a garment gathered and bunched rather than worn, its folds scored with streaks of blue and rust orange. Above it sits bare skin: auburn hair pulled into a small coil, shoulder blades sketched in thin pencil, a scatter of orange dashes marking the crook of the neck.
Below the garment the body loses almost all its color. Buttocks and thighs are drawn in unbroken contour line, apart from a few flecks of orange and blue near the hip bone and knee. One hand disappears into a fold of maroon cloth at the waist, the other hangs bare against his side. His face stays hidden entirely behind a raised shoulder and turned neck.
A compact monogram and the words Stehender Mann sit tucked into the sheet's lower corner. Compared with the direct confrontation of Schiele's most exposed nudes, this figure keeps its back turned. Hips squared, weight settled evenly. A man half in, half out of your erotic dreaming.
