Two cranes cut across the paper of this Taguchi Tomoki print at opposite angles, one climbing toward the upper edge, one dropping toward the lower corner, as if the woodblock itself remembered a single wingbeat split into two frames.
Ink pools thicker at each crane's shoulder and thins along the trailing flight feathers, a carver's register mark from a printing town in Toyama where washi paper has been pulled by hand for centuries. Pine sprigs crossing each beak like a signature, the tsuru-matsu pairing lifted straight from kimono pattern books and New Year screens, a shorthand for marriages that hold and years that keep coming.
No pond, no cloud, no companion figure interrupts the paper's pale field. The birds carry their own setting, wings doing the work a painted background would otherwise do. Cut sometime in the final Edo decade before Meiji reform reached the printmaking guilds, this sheet still trusts a blank margin the way older ukiyo-e never quite dared.
