Newmann the Great opens the door with one hand, and the whole afterlife falls out like laundry. A tambourine tips forward. A floating guitar drifts past a brass bugle, and a celadon woman in a spark-stitched gown smiles through the haze of the spirit cabinet.

This vintage magic poster sold a trick the Davenport Brothers made famous decades earlier, then stuffed it with tenants. A winged vermilion demon hangs off the roof. An owl keeps the door. Two bone-pale skeletons elbow in from the wings, and a caped Mephistopheles props up a barn-door ace of spades.

Harry Kellar made that shoulder adviser a trademark of the stage magician, and here the idea multiplies. A powder-blue witch steers her broomstick through indigo night. A black cat arches. At the footlights a skull-faced helper lugs a cream panel offstage, a stagehand with no skin in the game.

Spiritualism had filled American parlors with knocking tables, and vaudeville sold the same shiver by the ticket. The color lithograph is printed in loud inks built to shout across a prairie main street. And as an art print, Newmann’s Wonderful Spirit Mysteries keeps the golden age of magic at full volume.

Origin Story

C. A. George Newmann (1880–1952), born Christian Andrew George Naeseth near Kenyon, Minnesota, was the hypnotist and mentalist who reinvented contact mind reading and, by 1920, no-contact mind reading. Inspired as a boy by a traveling medium and the magician "Harry Heller," he learned his craft from magic books and a magic set, debuting around age thirteen. Billed "Newmann the Boy Wonder" from 1896, then "Newmann the Great," he toured the Northwest and West Coast for over half a century, selling hypnotism, mentalism, and "fun and wonders" as first-class entertainment to three generations of heartland Americans.

A compulsive bibliophile, he amassed a vast conjuring library and wrote Newmann's Magical Library (1945) and Clever Card Conjuring (1922). James B. Alfredson's Newmann: The Pioneer Mentalist (1989) and Leo Behnke's Collected Mental Secrets (1991) preserve his legend.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
