Heinrich Kley’s Satyr and Maiden opens on a thicket soaked in viridian watercolor wash, where a goat-legged suitor bends his ram horn over a spray of chalk-white bloom. The nude maiden tips her chin to watch him. Her hair pours past her hips in teal and India ink, each strand a quick loop of the pen.

You can see why Walt Disney collected Kley’s drawings. Fantasia carries their hoofprints. But Kley made his name in Munich, where Jugend and Simplicissimus printed his pen and ink satires. That schooling shows in the cross-hatching packed across the satyr’s shoulder blades. It thickens into a skirt of soot-black fur at the haunch, then thins to pewter gray on the cloven hooves. Opaque gouache does the reverse, lifting her belly and collarbone out of celadon shadow.

Malachite and verdigris pool behind the pair in loose stains, and brambles sprout violet barbs along the margin. Thorned vines swing around the couple in Jugendstil whiplash curves, their indigo flower heads clenched into spider shapes.

This German illustration trades the old chase of Greek myth for a pause. The beast stopping to smell the blossom between them, tufted tail flicking towards the paper’s edge. This mythological art print brings an old joke about desire onto your modern wall.

Origin Story

Heinrich Kley (1863–1945) was the German illustrator whose merciless pen turned industry, animals and human folly into darkly comic grotesques. Born in Karlsruhe and trained there and in Munich, he began as a conventional painter of portraits and landscapes before winning renown in the 1890s for oils and watercolours of factories and machines—proof of his eerie fluency with the modern industrial world.

His fame rests on exuberant pen-and-ink drawings for Jugend and Simplicissimus: bulbous satyrs, wrestling crocodiles and colossal beasts ridden by tiny men. His restless line mocked pomp, appetite and pretension with equal glee. Walt Disney amassed his work and let it shape Fantasia's anthropomorphic animation. Banned under the Nazis, his death date remains disputed—yet his wiry line endures.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
