Athanasius Pernath, the gem cutter of Gustav Meyrink’s occult novel, has dropped through a trapdoor and the cellar flight tilts under him. His other arm swings wide for balance. Hugo Steiner-Prag strips him to a shadow figure with a narrow skull and stilt-long legs.

The Way to Horror belongs to Der Golem: Prager Phantasien, the portfolio of twenty-five lithographs Steiner-Prag published with Kurt Wolff in Leipzig, 1916. Gustav Meyrink’s novel had just made the Prague ghetto famous. But the ghetto itself was gone. Josefov’s crooked tenements had been razed for boulevards within his lifetime, so the Prague-born artist rebuilt its cellars from memory in soot gray and chalk pallor.

This is German Expressionist book illustration with the monster left off the page. Broken treads sink into pitch below him. His hand keeps reading the wall.

The Way to Horror art print belongs in a stairwell or a book-lined study, anywhere silent-film dread can sit in pewter monochrome. The doppelgänger Athanasius Pernath is about to meet already stands beside you... waiting.

Origin Story

Hugo Steiner-Prag (1880–1945) was the Prague-born illustrator, painter and educator whose shadow-haunted lithographs conjured the Jewish ghetto of old Prague. Trained in Prague and Munich, he appended "Prag" to his name and became a professor at Leipzig's Royal Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trade, where he taught book design and typography for a generation.

His masterpiece—twenty-five lithographs for Gustav Meyrink's Der Golem (1916)—fixed the clay giant as an Expressionist revenant, and his earlier visions for E.T.A. Hoffmann and Hans Christian Andersen confirmed his gift for the fantastic. One of Germany's most celebrated book artists, he was driven into exile by the Nazis, fleeing to Sweden and New York, where he died in 1945.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
