Lucifer burns across the top in coral capitals, each letter packed with tiny scrollwork. Beneath that title, a naked rebel archangel hangs in a column of soot. His crossed arms grip both shoulders. A wind-torn veil, pinned by one small jeweled clasp, and a bone-pale loincloth are all the wardrobe left to him.

R.N. Roland Holst, who painted murals for Amsterdam’s diamond workers’ union, kept the sheet flat and frontal with parchment pilasters framing the drop. Rust red fumes boil at both lower corners. Stone lithography let him stipple each rib, then flood the ornament bands with terracotta rosettes. This is Dutch Art Nouveau stripped to bone and scroll.

Vondel’s Golden Age verse drama about revolt in heaven met a ban in 1654. Royaards revived it for N.V. Het Tooneel with a score by Hubert Cuypers, and the 1910 vintage stage poster announced its return on city walls. Symbolism gave the villain a grieving spine. Hang this fine art print and the old quarrel between pulpit and playhouse drops straight into your room.

Origin Story

Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (1868–1938) was the Dutch painter, lithographer and designer who fused Symbolist reverie with socialist conviction. Amsterdam-born, trained at the Rijksakademie under August Allebé, he married the poet and revolutionary Henriette van der Schalk and moved in the circles of Herman Gorter and William Morris—believing art must serve the community, pure in form and clear in purpose.

That ideal drove murals for Berlage's Beurs, the Diamond Workers' Union, and the Supreme Court, and stained glass for Utrecht's St. Martin's Cathedral; it shaped his woodcuts, posters and typography, most famously his campaigning graphics for the first Dutch trade union. Director of the Rijksakademie from 1926, he was honoured by a Hildo Krop statue—installed only after the war's occupation ended.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
