Palden Lhamo gallops out of a lamp-black sky. Magzor Gyalmo, the Queen Who Repels Armies, crosses an oxblood tide on a tawny mule. Her skin is lapis-blue. Three eyes ringed in chalk-white stare over a cinnabar mouth crowded with fangs. Saffron hair climbs above a five-skull crown in wire-thin strokes, and a burnished sun marks her navel.

Sanskrit knows this Vajrayana Buddhist dharmapala as Shri Devi. In Tibetan legend she was a ruler’s wife who could not turn her husband from slaughter. She left Lanka on a mule saddled with the flayed skin of their son. The thangka painter spared nothing. Slack hands swing under the girth. Serpents serve as reins, and a skull cup rests above her tiger-skin skirt.

Under the hooves lies a sea of blood, every wave curled in rust and coral. Simhavaktra, the crimson lion-headed attendant, runs at the mule’s tail. Gelug lamas in ochre-yellow hats sit above the churn, unbothered. Their school took this wrathful protector as guardian of the Dalai Lamas and Lhasa. This Himalayan art print keeps the chalky bite of distemper. Hang her where a doorway needs three open eyes.

Origin Story

Palden Lhamo ("Glorious Goddess", Sanskrit Shri Devi) is the only female among the Eight Guardians of the Dharma and the fierce, enlightened protectress of Tibet and the Dalai Lama lineage. Once the rakshasa queen Remati, she slaughtered her own son to break his anti-Buddhist destiny, fled on a white mule, and answered her husband's arrow by turning the wound into an eye that watches the twenty-four regions.

Deep blue, red-haired, three-eyed, she rides side-saddle across a sea of blood, human skull at her lips. She is a wrathful emanation of Tara, guardian of the oracle lake Lhamo La-tso, and patron of the black-ground nag thang paintings hung in the tantric gonkhang. She is considered an enlightened being—terror in service of dharma.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
