The Little Sea Maid - Harry Clarke Art Print
About the Wall Art
Fine Art Prints

Forget cheap reproductions and printable posters. Only the best will do.
Velvety matte fine art paper (warm white, archival-grade, 200gsm) with bold, vibrant, non-toxic pigment inks. High-definition print lab techniques give you sharper details, deeper saturation and true-to-life tones. While the matte surface keeps glare down and archival-grade materials mean the colors you fall for stay vivid for decades.
Framed Fine Art Prints

Your print arrives framed and ready to hang, so it goes straight from the box to your wall.
Chevron cut wooden frames make a timeless statement in three distinctive colors: black, white and natural. Each frame is made of sustainably sourced FSC® certified knotless pine. And your artwork is protected behind ultra-clear perspex glaze that’s lighter than glass and shatter-resistant.
Float Framed Canvas Prints

Luscious artist-grade cotton canvas, hand-stretched and finely textured, gives every detail depth and precision, catching light and color with striking clarity. While a precisely measured floating frame leaves a slim gap around the canvas, so it seems to hover with a sleek, gallery-worthy effect. Finished with your choice of frame color — black, white or natural — made from sustainably sourced FSC® certified knotless pine.
Giclée Printing

Forget 4 color CMYK. Giclée layers up to 12 — alive with deeper shadows, richer highlights and multidimensional contrasts. Pro-lab printing process helps art stay bold & breathtaking for up to 100 years. And the neo-pigment, water-based inks are 100% non-hazardous and toxin-free.
About the Artwork
A stemmed glass hovers near the mermaid’s fingers, and the underwater court leans in. Harry Clarke drew The Little Sea Maid in 1916 for George G. Harrap’s edition of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales, his first published book. Soot-black India ink floods the sheet. Parchment ivory survives only where his pen refused to go.
Above her, the gaunt sea witch presides, hair streaming into the current. Checkered water snakes coil below her ribs, the pets Andersen’s witch calls her chickens. Coin-eyed fish crowd the upper margin. A footed bowl bubbles by its column.
The gothic, Symbolist dread sits higher still. Serpents in harlequin checks sling themselves around the hag’s dotted belly, and her goblet of draught already rests near the the Little Sea Maid's hand.
Clarke learned line in his father’s Dublin stained glass studio, and every contour here carries the weight of leading. Aubrey Beardsley’s Art Nouveau decadence sharpens the stippling, slowed by the patience of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement.
The Little Sea Maid's tail, scrolled with curling scales, still sweeps toward ocean-floor anemones. She has already paid with her voice. This pen and ink illustration, now a vintage fairy tale art print, keeps the second before that tail becomes feet that tread on knives.
