A costume maker first laid the phoenix across pale silk, and then a Meiji watercolorist bent over the finished photograph with a fine brush and did it again. Performer in Bugaku-style Costume was staged in a studio in the 1880s, when hand-colored albumen silver prints sailed home in the trunks of foreign travelers, a trade historians now call Yokohama shashin.

The work was slow. A master colorist in 1880s Japan could finish two or three pictures in a twelve-hour day, and you can count those hours here. Ochre-gold quills fan along the fold of a lavender-gray sleeve. Teal plumes trail below them. Cream cloud scrolls open around centers of plum and sage green, every edge drawn by a steady wrist.

Her face got almost no paint at all. The colorist left it the cool tone of the albumen, calm beneath that bronze-gilt crest. She looks past the lens toward something offstage. The gagaku flutes and drums are missing, and a plain taupe backdrop fills the space where a palace stage would be. Under all that color, the silver still holds her gaze.

Origin Story

Bugaku (舞楽) is Japanese traditional dance at the speed of ceremony: slow, precise, regal, performed mostly at the Japanese imperial court for over twelve hundred years. On a platform six yards square, dancers in intricate costumes and masks repeat their patterns. Legendary battles. Divine encounters. A phoenix. Two dragons frolicking. An ancient manual asks the body to sway like a tree in a cool breeze.

Its roots braid Shinto mythology with seventh-century Buddhist dance-drama carried from Korea and China. Ame-no-Uzume danced on an upturned tub until the gods' laughter drew sun goddess Amaterasu from her cave. Gagaku court music keeps pace; palace musician Tadamaro Ono stands thirty-ninth in an unbroken family line. Opened to the public after World War II, touring worldwide in 1959, bugaku and gagaku remain the oldest known surviving court dance and music.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
