The Ho-o plunges headfirst through black lacquer night, talons clamped to a limb, eye fixed on the paulownia below. Gold lacquer glows along each scalloped feather. Rust copper blooms at the breast. A cinnabar red wattle burns like a struck match.
Legend holds that the Ho-o settles on the kiri tree alone, and only when a just ruler sits the throne. So the bird stalls above broad leaves and drooping blossom sprays, the same blossom Japan's emperors took as a secondary crest. Maki-e masters built such scenes by sifting gold powder into wet lacquer until nashiji flecks drifted across the dark like pollen on a midnight pond.
George Ashdown Audsley printed this Japanese phoenix for The Ornamental Arts of Japan, a chromolithograph issued in London during the early 1880s. Victorian collectors hungry for Japonisme pored over this plate as Meiji era Japan swung its ports open to the West. Olive bronze plumes droop across the top edge, heavy as tassels.
