A mandarin duck couple meets on a slab of wet ink with coral feet planted int he earth. Everything in Birds, Mandarin Ducks, and Flowers tilts toward them. The drake has pressed his bill into his back, eye shut, rust-orange crest tipped over verdigris wings. His mate studies him with cinnamon flanks freckled fine as millet seed.
Okamoto Shūki painted this in the late Edo years of the 19th century, when artists copied Chinese bird albums and sketched live ducks from nature. That double schooling shows in this silk painting. Ripples run in graphite ink. A golden-flowered herb spills from the bank and snags the hen's tail on its saw-toothed leaves.
Above, the tall format climbs a gnarled trunk where hydrangea swells into porcelain blue and two songbirds cling to the rock. Higher still, a sparrow calls to a butterfly crossing the amber silk ground.
