A war god sits for his portrait in cane. Utagawa Kunisada built this Edo period ukiyo-e print around the headliner of Basketry Work: By the Craftsman Ichida Shōshichirō of Naniwa, the 1819 kagozaiku show that wove Guan Yu from Osaka bamboo. Kantei, as Japan called him, fills the lower half like a temple door.
His face burns vermilion. A soot-dark beard pours onto a teal robe stiff with marigold dragon brocade, and one hand clutches a book roll. Behind him Zhou Cang squints through plum armor, hoisting the Green Dragon Crescent Blade until its moon-pale edge splits the moss-green lattice.
The rest of the hall carries on without them. A peacock drags a tail of staring eyes past a strutting rooster. Two spotted deer bend their necks. A shrimp-pink aka-oni clamps a bundle in its teeth and kicks one clawed foot high. And up near the ceiling a lime parrot swings on a tasseled perch, waiting for its turn in the spotlight.
