Hiroshige lets a cat own the best seat in Edo. His Asakusa Rice Fields and Torinomachi Festival, carved and printed in 1857 for One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, frames winter through a slatted Yoshiwara window. The white cat sits with its back to us. Its gaze runs straight to Mount Fuji.
Printers wiped the woodblocks by hand to pull a bokashi gradient from inky Prussian blue to a coral glow. Across the fields, specks of worshippers trail toward the Day of the Rooster market, where merchants sold kumade bamboo rakes for scooping up fortune. One of those charms rests on the green tatami as tiny hairpins. Geese drift in a loose chevron above bare trees.
A towel slumps over a blue-patterned porcelain bowl. A chrysanthemum-printed screen edges the left border in sage gray. Japonisme collectors in Paris would soon hunt this ukiyo-e series, and Van Gogh copied its plum blossoms in oil. Hiroshige could never reflect on that blossoming reverence for his work. In many ways, he gave his last thoughts to a patient cat, tail curled, watching Edo turn toward evening.
