Two ink-black cranes meet beak to beak across an ivory field. Each bird's neck arcs into a question mark, beak lifted to touch a branch of stylized pine needles printed in the same near-black ink as the body. No gradient, no crosshatching. Just the stark language of a hand-cut block meeting handmade washi. A Toyama katagami stencil pattern from the closing years of Edo rule, printed in a single dense indigo-black pigment onto handmade washi.
Wings splay in flat, angular panels; no shading softens the silhouette, only the carver's blade defining feather from body, leg from tail. One eye sits round and open, its twin a slender crescent, a small asymmetry that keeps the mirrored pair from reading as a stamp repeated twice.
Crane and pine together carried old meaning across Edo-period visual culture: long life, steady partnership, winter survival. Framed in cream space with no border, the pairing still holds that pared-down folk-print authority — graphic, symmetrical, unmistakably tied to nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking tradition.
