A small songbird hangs head-down on a lotus stem, reading the cracked cinnabar lacquer below like a map of old rain. G.A. Audsley's Harmony of Nature comes from The Ornamental Arts of Japan, their London folio of 1882 to 1884. And this design evokes a kachō-ga lineage, the bird-and-flower subject Japanese artisans carried from scroll to lacquer box.
The lotus leaf is past its summer. Rust sienna and saffron eat its ruffled rim, and celadon green veins fan like the ribs of a paper parasol. Lower, a jade-beaded lotus seed pod rides a speckled stalk looped into a lazy knot.
The bird wears teal plumage over a coal-black back. One cream wing bar catches the light. Pink-tipped blossoms crowd the foot of the stem. Two vermilion seal stamps keep watch at the margin. This vintage Japanese art print carries Japonisme into the Aesthetic Movement parlor as botanical wall art, and autumn keeps turning gold.
Victorian designers studied Audsley's plates like pattern books. Lemercier's Paris presses built the image in layered color lithography, so the verdigris veins and ochre frills of the lotus leaf stand proud of the paper the way inlay stands proud of lacquerware.
