Edo pilgrims once climbed Fujisan on foot, chanting as they rose with the Fuji-kō confraternities. By 1930 a steam train could carry you to its lakes before lunch. Peerless Mt. Fuji was the Japanese Government Railways pitching that shortcut to English-reading travelers.
The stratovolcano sits far back, its summit a chalk-white bowl streaked with violet gray. The ghost of Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji hangs in this Showa-era vintage railway poster, retold through one hand-tinted photograph.
Its eye settles on a pine whose cinnamon trunk forks like a signal junction, each bough holding clumps of fir-green needles over turquoise water. Farther out the lake sinks into peacock blue. A wooded bluff goes peat-brown where the sun quits it.
Powder-blue letters name the railway along the bottom edge. Above them JAPAN spreads in heavy black capitals across the paper's ivory margin.
