Spring air in Edo smells of split bamboo. Utagawa Hiroshige's vintage Japanese woodblock print catches the 1819 craze for basketry work by the craftsman Ichida Shōshichirō of Naniwa, when Osaka weavers bent cane into beasts and sages for Asakusa crowds. Every inch of jade green ground carries a cream kagome lattice, the hexagram weave of a farmer's basket stretched into sky.
Bukan Zenji rides at the center. The Zen monk wears a coral robe and gold hoop earrings, a horsehair whisk hanging from his fist like a pulled cloud. Under him a tiger in saffron and ink-black stripes naps with eyes half shut. Its tail loops above the monk's bald head, a woven halo nobody ordered. A grinning man in a violet fur-collared coat tickles the great paw with a bamboo sprig.
Above them the misemono sideshow drifts on. Phoenix feathers trail in rust and bone. A kirin with a flaming mane sniffs a curly shishi lion, and a spotted cat guards its scarlet cushion. Edo period ukiyo-e laughs here through a thousand bamboo knots.
