Hanami crowds will arrive any minute. Gakutei knows it, and so does she. This Edo teahouse girl has stepped out from the reed blinds to steady the yellow comb in her shimada topknot, eyes cocked at the stall's own advertisement. Its kana swings on white paper. She is the real billboard.
Around 1840 Yashima Gakutei drew this ukiyo-e beauty for the carvers' mountain-cherry blocks, just as Tenpō officials readied their crackdown on luxury. Customers still came for the face.
Sakura pile overhead in rose and cream. Sepia bark climbs in wavy grain. Across the water a brick-red hall and pine clumps crown the far shore. Coral clouds of flat pigment slice the 19th-century scene in two.
Her obi knots rust lattice against moss green. Clacking black geta carry her pewter stripes across the celadon ground, a Prussian blue hem curling behind. Coins and gossip wait on the plain wooden bench.
Ukiyo-e adored these chaya musume, the celebrity girls of the tea stalls. This bijinga art print keeps one on your wall mid-glance, forever lingering near the empty bench under the blossoms.
