Giclée Printing

The first mosque on this site pointed the wrong way, or so the usual account runs, and the builders started again beside it. Hercules Brabazon Brabazon paints the tower that came out of that correction in soft peach and salmon, with narrow dark slits stepping up its shaft and a thin pencil spire above.

The Koutoubia rises 77 meters over the plain, and the gilded copper orbs on its finial shrink as they climb. The Almohad caliph Yaqub al-Mansur completed it in the twelfth century, and its name recalls the booksellers who once worked in its shadow.

The Almohad dynasty raised three great sister towers: this one, the Hassan Tower in Rabat and the Giralda in Seville. Of the three, the Koutoubia alone still stands as its builders left it, and its sandstone glows rose at the end of the day.

Brabazon, whose loose washes carry the lessons of Turner, floods the sky with cerulean and lets the paper stay bare where light strikes the tower's face. Cloud banks in pale lavender and cream pile up behind the shaft. A low silhouette of domes and rooftops edges the horizon, and a handful of pencil marks hold the tower's lantern in place. Tiny dark windows climb the shaft at wide intervals, and nothing disturbs the tower's pale plain face.
